2011-2012
Still coping with the loss of my mother, my former brother-in-law was suddenly killed in a motorcycle accident, which inspired the initial painting of the same name and prompted this series. I use water in these paintings as a symbol for death and/or the voyage into the afterlife. The vulnerability depicted in the falling horse is to remind us how fragile life can be. The red fabric is to represent life on earth - life as we currently know it, like life’s blood - flowing and passionate: something our nature tells us to hold on to. This series simply explores this powerful transition from life to death and then into whatever comes next: it’s The Beginning of the Beginning.
